Read the Texas EMS Trauma News… If You Can Get It

Get it here! See below. Please note that some links in the newsletter may not be operative, due to the DSHS web outage.

We decided to reward ourselves for a productive morning with a peek at the latest Texas EMS Trauma News. We had just received an email, heralding it's availability on the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) web site.

The email held much promise for enlightenment. It said,

Austin (TX) Police Save Cadet with CPR and AED during run at Training Academy

There was no general outcry for firings and prosecution of the Involved Officers. Even though it was covered by local media, a story like this lacks "legs", in editor parlance. It isn't a story that keeps going, every day -- so it wouldn't be a big surprise if you missed it.

But, we noticed. And, we think you should hear about it.

Police Motorcycle Skills Competition at Cabela's, Buda (TX) April 1-2, 2016

There's no indication that any of the events involve the use of a ball-point pen, but instead events are designed to feature safe and precise operation of the motorcycle.

If they did have a citation-writing event, we know a few potential competitors who would be "10-8 with multiple 'fours'", (to borrow a phrase from Jean Shepard) "faster than a jack rabbit on a date".

We won't be able to attend, but we will be there in spirit.

If you are in the area, why not plan to stop by? At the very least, plan on driving safely.

Three, Four, Shut the Door!

In our quest to find interesting stuff that will keep responders healthy, we found and an article which can help Firefighter's alive.

Manage the doors to keep oxygen away from the fuel and fire, heat and smoke away from the rescuer and those they are trying to rescue.

Tsunamis? Really?

Having been the "Safety Guy!*" at work, I have a sensitively for Emergency Managers. Both are expected to ponder, prevent and prepare for things that not only do most people not want to think about, but they think you are crazy because you feel you need to.

"Tsunami Prep? What's that, beyond surfboard waxing?"

Do non-coastal areas need to prepare? Will you receive evacuees? Casualties? Permanent residents? Become a new Beach town?

Fully Involved: Rehab, Carbon Monoxide, NFPA 1584

While searching for additional feeds to feature in, we ran across the now-inactive podcast, "Fully Involved". In what we think is the hottest title for a Fire-based EMS podcast, we found the following episode:

Chief Gary Ludwig, EMS Section Chair, interviews EMS educator and author Dr. Bryan Bledsoe and actor Randolph Mantooth.

We had occasion to hear Dr. Bledsoe and Mr. Mantooth (Yes, Larry, the Dr. Bledsoe and the Randolph Mantooth) keynote addressing at a Texas EMS conference.

Helping Your Kids Learn by Osmosis

Today's article Five Ways to Protect Your Children by Victoria Newman in Law Officer strikes a familiar note.

When God made Peace Officers

We quoted an excerpt from the following to a colleague, recently, and discovered gaps in our institutional memory. Attributed to the famous and prolific author, Anonymous, we present
When God made Peace Officers

When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the specs on this order?"

CDC Contact Lens Wellness Advice Includes Poster

Have you seen the commercial where a woman throws her cleanest dirty contact lens in the toilet and he is tempted to retrieve it?

It makes me shudder the same way as when somebody hands you grapefruit juice that you think is orange. In case, you too looked away, this is not a recommended practice, even if your dog doesn't have a problem with it.
