06/22/2018 Fire Update - Minimal Growth on the Crooked Creek Fire (Crooked Creek Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - 9 hours 1 min ago
Mapping of the Crooked Creek fire during a reconnaissance flight June 21st showed the fire size to be approximately 230 acres. Growth is primarily due to wind and slope alignment on all sides of the fire perimeter. Overall, fire activity continues to be minimal, with creeping, backing and smoldering. The fire is located in a remote location on the northern portion of the Guadalupe Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest. Ground resources, which includes two Hotshot crews and six engine modules, have constructed indirect fire line to prepare for managed burnout operations that will occur over the next few days, weather permitting. Due to the remote location and rough terrain, aerial ignition will also be utilized using a Type 3 helicopter assigned to the fire. The helicopter will drop chemical-filled plastic spheres that look like ping-pong balls in strategic locations identified by fire managers. A chemical reaction causes the spheres to ignite vegetation on the ground. By...

San Antonio Fire Command to be Transferred Back to Valles Caldera National (San Antonio Fire Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - 10 hours 9 min ago
The combination of infrared flights and firefighters walking around the majority of the fire’s perimeter using handheld GPS devices determined the San Antonio Fire’s acreage was much less than originally estimated. The ABQ Zone Incident Management Team will transition command back to Valles Caldera National Preserve Type 4 organization tomorrow morning. As fire activity has drastically decreased, more crews are expected to demobilize. After a fire, the first priority is emergency stabilization in order to prevent further damage to life, property or natural resources. The stabilization work begins immediately and may continue for up to a year. The longer-term rehabilitation effort to repair damage caused by the fire begins after the fire is out and continues for several years. Rehabilitation focuses on the lands unlikely to recover naturally from wildland fire damage. Restrictions: The Valle Grande entrance station and bookstore will remain open to the public, and ranger-led...
