Brian Head Fire Evening Update June 25 (Brian Head Fire Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - Sun, 06/25/2017 - 21:48
Weather conditions improved slightly today, leading to minimal growth on the fire perimeter. Incident Commander Tim Roide described today as, “a good day for firefighters, who were able to have success securing areas of particular concern, including the many structures affected by the Brian Head Fire.” With the winds forecast to come from the southwest again tomorrow afternoon, fire managers are anticipating spread down Horse Valley. To counter this spread, a dozer constructed indirect fireline, away from the current fire perimeter, across the valley. Airtankers dropped retardant immediately adjacent to the dozerline with the intent that the retardant should minimize the ability of embers to start spot fires across the dozerline. Tomorrow, crews will continue to secure the southern perimeter of the fire to slow its progression toward Mammoth Creek. They will also be scouting out ahead of the fire to the north and south to be prepared if the fire activity picks up and moves the...

East Fork Fire Update 6/25/17 (East Fork Fire Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - Sun, 06/25/2017 - 18:36
There have been numerous aircraft busting the temporary flight restriction (TFR) in place over the fire. The TFR is in place to provide for the safety of fire-related aircraft operations. Pilots should check with the Federal Aviation Administration before flying in the area. The most up to date TFR is available at http://tfr.faa.gov/tfr2/list.html. The return of warmer and drier weather has started to dry the fuels around the East Fork Fire which is burning in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. As of noon today, there were only a couple visible smokes within the fire perimeter, but as the day progresses there is potential to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production. The lightning-caused 1,016-acre fire that is burning in a limited protection area, has not grown in the last 4 days. The demobilization process has begun and we now have 121 personnel assigned. Unauthorized drone shuts down air operations over the Boundary Fire (Boundary Fire Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - Sun, 06/25/2017 - 18:09
This morning, while a helicopter assisting with firefighting efforts was flying over the Boundary Fire, an unauthorized unmanned aerial systems, also known as a drone, was reported flying over the fire within the Boundary Fire Temporary Flight Restricted area. As a safety precaution the helicopter was advised to stand down until the drone had left the fire area. “Flying a drone over a wildfire to shoot video footage can create a serious safety issue for firefighting aircraft conducting aerial ignitions, bucket drops, or responding to a medical emergency,” Incident Commander, Jeff Andrews said. “Sometimes what seems like a fun, harmless activity can have major impacts to the safety of our firefighters.” Members of the public should never fly an unmanned aerial systems over or near a wildfire. Firefighting aircraft, such as air attack, lead planes, airtankers and helicopters, typically fly in smoky, windy and turbulent conditions. Safety depends on knowing what other...
