August 16 Fire Update (Sprague Fire Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - Wed, 08/16/2017 - 21:07
The Sprague Fire is now estimated to be 200 acres and is burning above Crystal Ford on the Gunsight Trail. The fire has burned actively over the past several days and is backing down steep terrain. Due to dry fuels and predicted weather conditions, fire managers expect to see continued fire growth over the next several weeks. The fire is burning in a mosaic pattern with areas of burned and unburned vegetation. The Sprague Fire is now being managed by the Flathead Interagency Type III Team led by Incident Commander Jim Edgren. The team’s objective is to slow fire growth through natural features such as ridges, creek bottoms, avalanche chutes, and rocky areas. The fire is currently burning in terrain too steep to safely conduct ground firefighting operations. The team will continue to use aerial resources to reinforce natural and manmade barriers. Limited wildland firefighting resources are available due to the multitude of fires throughout the northwest. The safety of the...

An avalanche chute in the north end of the Buck Creek drainage is still serving as a natural barrier to the fire and there was minimum growth to the south and east on Tuesday. Weather and Fire Behavior: Favorable weather conditions allowed firefighters to continue to improve hand lines along the fire's western flank, resulting in increased containment. Fire growth was limited to smoldering and creeping. Today’s Planned Actions: Fire managers will continue to utilize a protection strategy to prevent fire spread and keep the Buck Fire south of FSR201....

Fire Update August 16, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. (Lolo Peak Fire Wildfire)

Wildland Fire Incidents - Wed, 08/16/2017 - 19:40
As anticipated, higher temperatures, lower relative humidity levels and wind are contributing to active burning on the Lolo Peak Fire this afternoon. The inversion cleared about 3:00p.m. this afternoon, there are wind gusts of around 20 miles per hour, and relative humidity is about 20 percent in the fire area. The fire is spotting up to ½ mile, or more, ahead of itself to the east in the direction of Lolo Peak and making uphill runs. Active burning is also occurring on the northwest flank in the South Fork Lolo Creek drainage. The fire is torching, backing downhill and flanking in this area. On the southwest flank, the fire is backing down hill. Crews and engines, with the support of both airplanes and helicopters, have been working to keep fire spread in check. On the north end, crews are holding the fire on containment lines. With the winds and the subsequently poor humidity recovery, active burning is expected to continue into the
