Free Rebuilding and Repair Advice Available in Leon County Jan. 24-29

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – FEMA and home improvement retailers in Leon County are teaming up Jan. 24-29 to provide free information and literature on making homes stronger and safer, as Floridians repair or rebuild their homes damaged by Hurricane Michael.

 

FEMA specialists will be on hand in Tallahassee to answer questions and offer home improvement guidance with proven methods to prevent or reduce damage from future disasters.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sarah Herring grew up in her family’s home near the bay in Port St. Joe, was married in the backyard and now owns the property mortgage-free. Hurricane Michael’s winds tore off the roof and ripped up the walls. The storm surge flowed into the house.

Years ago, after her father died, her mother wanted to drop the homeowner’s and flood insurance policies on the property. “We would not let her,” Herring said.

Additional Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available for Survivors

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – Individuals who have exhausted Disaster Unemployment Assistance, or DUA, may be eligible for up to 26 weeks of additional continued unemployment benefits.

 

DUA is for employees or self-employed individuals who became unemployed as a direct consequence of hurricanes Irma or Maria in 2017.

Temporary housing unit occupants: Protect yourself from FEMA imposters

Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Paradise

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The third Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Butte County is opening in Paradise tomorrow to provide residents impacted by the California wildfires with selected state and federal disaster resources.

The DRC will open at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Closed Sundays.
