AVO Great Sitkin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Minor earthquakes detected; views of summit obscured by clouds

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 01/26/2019 - 15:32
Jan 26, 2019 20:51 - A few small local earthquakes were observed in the past 24 hours. No explosive activity was detected on a regional infrasound array on Adak Island. Cloudy conditions obscured views of the summit in web camera and satellite imagery over the past 24 hours. Great Sitkin volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - No explosions detected and cloudy conditions obscure summit.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 01/26/2019 - 15:32
Jan 26, 2019 20:51 - Persistent clouds obscured views of the summit region in satellite images over the past 24 hours. No significant earthquakes were detected, although both local seismic stations went offline overnight. Lava dome growth first observed in the summit crater on January 12 may be continuing. The last explosion at Cleveland occurred on January 9. Growth of a new lava dome since then may increase the likelihood of explosive activity at the volcano. Most explosions have a short duration and only present a hazard to aviation in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. Larger ...

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Strongly elevated surface temperatures in cloud-free views; no explosions detected.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 01/25/2019 - 17:32
Jan 25, 2019 22:02 - Strongly elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite imagery January 19-20 reflecting growth of a lava dome. Since January 20, satellite views have been obscured by clouds. No explosions have been detected since January 9, although the presence of the new lava dome since January 12 may increase the likelihood of explosive activity at the volcano. Intermittent explosions are common at Cleveland and will likely occur without warning. Most explosions have a short duration and only present a hazard to aviation in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. Larger ...

AVO Veniaminof YELLOW/ADVISORY - Eruption has paused or stopped; low-level seismic unrest continues.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 01/25/2019 - 17:32
Jan 25, 2019 22:02 - Seismicity in the form of low-amplitude tremor and discrete events indicates continuing unrest. Weakly elevated surface temperatures and minor steam emissions were observed in satellite and web camera images January 19-21, consistent with the cooling of lava emplaced in December. No visual observations have been made since January 21. Pauses in eruptive activity are common at Veniaminof and lava effusion and/or ash emissions could resume at any time without significant seismic precursors.
