AVO Veniaminof ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues; active lava flow; trace ash emissions

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 11/02/2018 - 17:31
Nov 2, 2018 21:46 - Low-level eruptive activity occurred at the intracaldera cone of Veniaminof volcano throughout the past week, indicated by relatively continuous seismic tremor, as well as by elevated surface temperatures and an eruption plume observed in satellite and web camera images. The eruption is characterized by low-level lava spattering, a lava flow, and variable emissions of steam and volcanic ash. Recent satellite observations show that the lava flow extends about 1.2 km (0.75 miles) from the vent. Fractures in the summit ice sheet adjacent to the lava flow are caused by melting. ...

AVO Great Sitkin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; seismicity above background; no activity seen in satellite data

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Thu, 11/01/2018 - 18:31
Nov 1, 2018 20:39 - Low-level unrest continues at Great Sitkin volcano. Seismicity remains above background levels with several small earthquakes detected over the past day. No activity was observed in cloudy satellite images. Great Sitkin volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

AVO Cleveland YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; no activity observed in cloudy satellite data.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Thu, 11/01/2018 - 18:31
Nov 1, 2018 20:39 - Low-level unrest continues at Cleveland volcano. Nothing significant has been detected in seismic and regional infrasound data over the past day. No activity was observed in cloudy satellite images. Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data. The web camera, one seismic station, and the local infrasound array are offline ...

AVO Semisopochnoi ORANGE/WATCH - Unrest continues; intermittent seismic tremor; no activity seen in satellite data

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Thu, 11/01/2018 - 18:31
Nov 1, 2018 20:39 - Unrest continues at Semisopochnoi volcano. Intermittent seismic tremor continues, but no explosions were detected since those that occurred yesterday morning. Satellite views were obscured by clouds over the past day, and no eruptive activity was observed. Additional explosions are possible and will likely occur without warning. Semisopochnoi is monitored with an on-island seismic network, and remotely by satellite and lightning sensors. An infrasound array on Adak Island may detect explosive emissions from Semisopochnoi with a 13 minute delay if atmospheric conditions ...

AVO Veniaminof ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues, producing lava flow; diffuse ash emissions continue.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Thu, 11/01/2018 - 18:31
Nov 1, 2018 20:39 - The eruption continues at Veniaminof volcano and is characterized by minor lava spattering and effusion of a lava flow from the cone in the ice-filled summit caldera. Seismicity consists of low-amplitude continuous tremor, and satellite views of the volcano showed elevated surface temperatures from the active lava effusion. Diffuse ash emissions, in variable concentrations, were observed in web camera images yesterday, but poor weather conditions have prevented webcam views of the eruption since late yesterday afternoon. Trace ashfall is possible in nearby communities ...

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Thu, 11/01/2018 - 11:32
Nov 1, 2018 15:45 - Recent work and news Steamboat geyser continued its pattern of near-weekly water eruptions during the month of October, with activity on October 8, 15, 23, and 31. There have now been 25 total Steamboat water eruptions in 2018. In the Upper Geyser Basin, activity at the new feature that formed on Geyser Hill in mid-September was very low throughout October. Field work during the past month was mostly aimed at preparing monitoring stations for the winter -- for example, the 12-station semi-permanent GPS network was removed in early October. Those instruments will be ...
