HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WARNING - LERZ lava eruption ongoing; sporadic ash emissions continue from Halema'uma'u

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 06/30/2018 - 17:30
Jun 30, 2018 20:14 - Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone The eruption in the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) continues with no significant change during the past 24 hours. Fountains from Fissure 8 spatter cone continue to supply lava to the open channel with intermittent small, short-lived overflows. These overflows rarely extend beyond the existing flow field. No active overflows were observed during this morning's helicopter overflight. The spatter cone is now about 55 m (180 ft) tall at its highest point, and fountains rarely rise above that point. At the coast, the northern margin of ...

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Elevated surface temperatures observed in satellite data

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 06/30/2018 - 17:30
Jun 30, 2018 19:29 - Unrest continues at Cleveland volcano. Elevated surface temperatures at the summit were observed in satellite data over the past day. These thermal signals are consistent with observations earlier this week of a lava flow in the summit crater and may be evident now due to decreased cloud cover over the volcano. Low-level seismic activity is ongoing, but nothing unusual was observed in seismic or pressure sensor (infrasound) data over the past day. Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest ...

YVO Yellowstone GREEN/NORMAL - YVO Monthly Update: normal earthquake rates, caldera subsidence, geyser eruptions

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 06/29/2018 - 18:31
Jun 1, 2018 21:36 - Recent work and news May was an exceptional month for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO)! (1) Steamboat Geyser erupted 4 times during the month (May 4, 13, 19, and 27), bringing the total number of eruptions in 2018 to 7. The eruptions display a rough periodicity, occurring every 7-8 days. University of Utah scientists deployed a portable seismic array around the geyser in early May and have captured three eruptions so far. It is hoped that these data will help to map the geyser's plumbing system, perhaps revealing insights into how intermittent geysers ...

AVO Great Sitkin GREEN/NORMAL - Color Code/Alert Level lowered to GREEN/NORMAL this week.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 06/29/2018 - 15:31
Jun 29, 2018 19:33 - The Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level were decreased to GREEN/NORMAL at Great Sitkin Volcano on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, based on declining seismic activity and no further indications of unrest. A small emission of ash and steam occurred on June 10, 2018. Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and ...

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Low-level unrest continues. Lava flow in crater observed on June 25.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 06/29/2018 - 15:31
Jun 29, 2018 19:33 - Low-level unrest continues at Cleveland volcano. A roughly 80 m diameter lava flow was observed on the floor of the summit crater on Monday, June 25, but since then there have been no new observations of the summit or additional signs of unrest. No significant activity was detected in seismic and pressure sensor data throughout the past week. Future explosive activity is likely and is expected to occur without warning. Previous explosions have produced hazardous conditions primarily near the summit crater, but occasionally they have been large enough to produce a ...

Jun 28, 2018 21:31 - Unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano. Low-level seismic activity is ongoing. No activity was observed in mostly cloudy satellite images over the past day. Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Nothing noteworthy observed in monitoring data

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Wed, 06/27/2018 - 16:32
Jun 27, 2018 19:32 - Unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano. Data transmission from the volcano was reestablished yesterday afternoon and seismic and infrasound data are now available. Low-level seismic activity is continuing. No activity was observed in mostly cloudy satellite images over the past day. The presence of a lava flow over the active vent increases the possibility of an explosion over the coming days to weeks and thus AVO raised the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level to ORANGE/WATCH yesterday. Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which ...

AVO Great Sitkin GREEN/NORMAL - Volcano has returned to background levels of activity

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Wed, 06/27/2018 - 14:30
Jun 27, 2018 18:49 - Earthquake activity at Great Sitkin Volcano has declined gradually and no further indications of increasing unrest have been observed since AVO detected a brief steam and ash explosion on June 10. For the time being, the volcano has returned to normal background levels of activity and AVO is thus lowering the Aviation Color Code and Alert Level to GREEN/NORMAL. Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored by a five-station seismic network on Great Sitkin Island and with additional seismic stations on the nearby islands of Igitkin, Adak, Kagalaska, and Kanaga. A six-element ...

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Lava flow observed in summit crater

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Tue, 06/26/2018 - 19:30
Jun 26, 2018 21:45 - Unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano and a lava flow about 80 meters (260 feet) in diameter on the floor of the summit crater was observed in satellite data on June 25, 2018. A possible steam emission was observed in satellite data at 0:48 UTC, June 26, 2018 that may be related to the effusion of lava in the crater. No other activity was observed in mostly cloudy satellite images over the past day. AVO is experiencing problems with data transmission from the volcano and seismic and infrasound data are temporarily unavailable. The presence of a lava flow over the ...

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Satellite data indicates small lava flow in summit crater.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Tue, 06/26/2018 - 16:31
Jun 26, 2018 21:07 - Satellite observations of Cleveland Volcano on June 25, 2018 indicate the presence of a small circular lava flow, about 80 meters in diameter, covering the floor of the summit crater. Geophysical monitoring data from Cleveland Volcano has been unavailable since early yesterday afternoon and thus it is unknown if the effusion of lava within the crater generated detectable seismicity or infrasound. However, the presence of a lava flow over the active vent increases the possibility of a vent clearing explosion over the coming days to weeks and thus AVO is raising the ...
