AVO Veniaminof YELLOW/ADVISORY - No significant observations in satellite, webcam, or seismic data.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Tue, 02/05/2019 - 16:32
Feb 5, 2019 20:53 - Nothing significant was observed in mostly cloudy satellite images and webcam views of the volcano over the past day. The level of seismicity remains low, but above background. It remains possible for eruptive activity consisting of lava effusion, ash emissions or both to resume at any time without significant precursory seismic events. Veniaminof volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to a more significant explosive eruption. AVO combines seismic, infrasound, lightning, and ...

HVO Kilauea YELLOW/ADVISORY - Low activity across the volcano. No lava at the surface. Low levels of gas emissions.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Tue, 02/05/2019 - 13:32
Feb 5, 2019 18:59 - Activity Summary: Kīlauea Volcano is not erupting. Rates of seismicity, deformation, and gas release have not changed significantly over the past week. Observations: Low rates of seismicity continue across the volcano, with earthquakes occurring primarily in the summit and south flank regions. GPS stations and tiltmeters continue to show motions consistent with refilling of the deep East Rift Zone. These rates have been steady over the past several weeks. At Kilauea's summit, tiltmeters are showing deflationary tilt consistent with the beginning of a ...

AVO Great Sitkin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Nothing significant seen in satellite data. Some small earthquakes over past day.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Mon, 02/04/2019 - 15:32
Feb 4, 2019 21:06 - Nothing significant was observed in mostly cloudy satellite images over the past day. A few small earthquakes have been detected on local seismic stations. No unrest or unusual activity noted on a nearby regional infrasound array located on Adak Island. Great Sitkin volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Weakly elevated surface temperatures observed over past day at the summit.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Mon, 02/04/2019 - 15:32
Feb 4, 2019 21:06 - Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed at the summit of Cleveland Volcano in one satellite image over the past day. No activity was detected in regional seismic or infrasound data. The most recent explosion of Cleveland Volcano occurred on January 9, 2019. Cleveland explosions are normally short duration and only present a hazard to aviation in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. Larger explosions that present a more widespread hazard to aviation are possible, but are less likely and occur less frequently. Local seismic and infrasound data at Cleveland ...

AVO Veniaminof YELLOW/ADVISORY - No significant observations in satellite, webcam, or seismic data.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sun, 02/03/2019 - 15:33
Feb 3, 2019 20:44 - Nothing significant was observed in cloudy satellite images and foggy webcam views over the past 24 hours. Intermittent weak seismicity, if it persists, was not visible in seismic data due to high noise levels. Eruptive activity consisting of lava effusion and/or ash emissions could resume at any time without significant seismic precursors. Veniaminof volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to a more significant explosive eruption. AVO Dutton UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED - Dutton moved from GREEN to UNASSIGNED due to lack of functioning seismic network.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 02/01/2019 - 19:32
Feb 2, 2019 00:31 - AVO can no longer seismically monitor Mount Dutton volcano due to the lack of a functioning seismic network there. As a result, AVO is unable to (1) assess whether Dutton may be building towards an eruption and (2) quickly confirm or dismiss reports of activity at the volcano. Because Dutton is no longer seismically monitored, it will move from volcano alert level Normal and aviation color code Green to "unassigned." As at other volcanoes without real-time seismic networks, AVO will continue to use satellite data, regional infrasound, lightning, and reports from pilots ...

AVO Great Sitkin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Steam plume seen once in satellite data and a few microearthquakes over the week

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 02/01/2019 - 19:32
Feb 1, 2019 22:17 - A minor steam plume was observed in a satellite image once during the past week. Otherwise, nothing significant was seen in satellite data. Microearthquakes have been detected on local seismic stations throughout the week, normally a few each day. A regional infrasound array on Adak Island did not pick up any indications of explosive activity. Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be ...

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Weakly elevated surface temperatures observed during the week; no explosions detected.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 02/01/2019 - 19:32
Feb 1, 2019 22:17 - Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite images throughout the week. A steam plume was observed at the volcano during clear weather on Sunday, January 27. Satellite data collected recently suggests lava dome growth first observed in the summit crater on January 12 may have ended as early as January 16. Since then, observations show the center of the newly emplaced lava dome is slowly subsiding. No explosive activity was detected in regional seismic or infrasound data during the week. The most recent explosion of Cleveland occurred on January 9. ...

AVO Veniaminof YELLOW/ADVISORY - Eruption has paused or stopped; very low-level seismic unrest continues.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 02/01/2019 - 19:32
Feb 1, 2019 22:17 - Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed over the past week at Veniaminof, consistent with the cooling of lava emplaced in December. A steam plume from the intracaldera cone was visible in clear webcam views. Intermittent weak seismicity persisted during the week in the form of occasional low frequency earthquakes and tremor. Pauses in eruptive activity are common at Veniaminof and lava effusion and/or ash emissions could resume at any time without significant seismic precursors. Veniaminof volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which ...

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 02/01/2019 - 15:33
Feb 1, 2019 20:36 - Recent work and news Steamboat geyser remains active in 2019, with three eruptions during the month—January 4, 16, and 25, the latter being one of the smallest (based on seismicity at station YNM and water discharge measured at the Tantalus stream gage) since the current sequence of water eruptions begain in March 2018. Yellowstone National Park scientists visited Norris Geyser Basin on January 30 and were able to restart the Norris temperature network (which had been off line since December 20). AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Weakly elevated surface temperatures observed over past day at the summit.

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Thu, 01/31/2019 - 17:32
Jan 31, 2019 22:07 - Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed at Cleveland in partly cloudy satellite images over the past 24 hours. No activity detected in regional seismic or infrasound data. The most recent explosion of Cleveland occurred on January 9. A new lava dome emplaced since that time may increase the likelihood of explosive activity at the volcano.
