AVO Cleveland YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; no activity seen in satellite data

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sun, 11/11/2018 - 15:32
Nov 11, 2018 21:01 - Low-level unrest continues at Cleveland volcano. Nothing significant has been detected in seismic or regional infrasound data over the past day. No activity was observed in cloudy satellite images. Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data. The web camera, one seismic station, and the local infrasound array are offline ...

AVO Semisopochnoi ORANGE/WATCH - No activity seen in satellite data or regional infrasound; seismic data out

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sun, 11/11/2018 - 15:32
Nov 11, 2018 21:01 - No eruptive activity was observed in cloudy satellite imagery or regional infrasound over the past day. The satellite link that transmits seismic data from Semisopochnoi failed on November 1, but an infrasound array on Adak Island should still detect significant explosive emissions from Semisopochnoi (with a 13-minute delay) if atmospheric conditions permit. Additional explosions are possible and will likely occur without warning. Semisopochnoi is monitored with an on-island seismic network, though this is currently off-line, and remotely by satellite and lightning ...

AVO Veniaminof ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues, producing lava flow; likely diffuse ash and steam emissions

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sun, 11/11/2018 - 15:32
Nov 11, 2018 21:01 - Veniaminof volcano continues to erupt, with minor lava spattering, effusion of a lava flow from the cone in the ice-filled summit caldera, and continuous, low-amplitude seismic tremor. Satellite views of the volcano over the past day showed elevated surface temperatures from the active lava effusion. Any observations of potential diffuse ash and steam plumes were obscured by clouds in webcam and satellite views throughout the day, but emissions likely continue. Trace ashfall is possible in nearby communities under favorable wind conditions. Veniaminof volcano is ...

AVO Great Sitkin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; no activity seen in satellite data

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 11/10/2018 - 15:32
Nov 10, 2018 20:43 - Low-level unrest continues at Great Sitkin volcano. Seismicity remains above background levels with several small earthquakes detected over the past day. No activity was observed in cloudy satellite images or in regional infrasound data. Great Sitkin volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

AVO Semisopochnoi ORANGE/WATCH - Unrest continues; possible small explosions detected

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 11/10/2018 - 15:32
Nov 10, 2018 20:43 - Unrest continues at Semisopochnoi volcano. Three possible small explosions were detected in infrasound data yesterday evening between 4:51 and 5:04 UTC (19:51-20:04 AKST). No associated ash clouds were observed in partly cloudy satellite views. Additional explosions are possible and will likely occur without warning. The satellite link that transmits seismic data from Semisopochnoi failed on November 1, but an infrasound array on Adak Island should still detect significant explosive emissions from Semisopochnoi (with a 13-minute delay) if atmospheric conditions permit. ...

AVO Veniaminof ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues, producing lava flow; diffuse ash and steam emissions

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Sat, 11/10/2018 - 15:32
Nov 10, 2018 20:43 - Veniaminof volcano continues to erupt, with minor lava spattering, effusion of a lava flow from the cone in the ice-filled summit caldera, and continuous, low-amplitude seismic tremor. Satellite views of the volcano over the past day showed elevated surface temperatures from the active lava effusion, as well as a diffuse ash plume drifting eastward at altitudes up to 10,000 ft. Webcam views also showed this diffuse ash plume yesterday before becoming obscured by clouds overnight and into this morning. Trace ashfall is possible in nearby communities under favorable wind ...

AVO Great Sitkin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; seismicity elevated; small explosion detected

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 11/09/2018 - 16:32
Nov 9, 2018 22:01 - Low-level unrest continues at Great Sitkin Volcano. Seismicity remains elevated with small earthquakes occurring at rates above background levels. In addition, a small explosion was detected seismically on Monday afternoon (16:58 AKST), though it was not seen in regional infrasound data and no ash cloud was observed in satellite data. No other activity was observed in partly cloudy to mostly cloudy satellite images or regional infrasound data over the past week. Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to ...

AVO Cleveland YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; seismicity low; elevated surface temperatures observed

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 11/09/2018 - 16:32
Nov 9, 2018 22:01 - Nothing significant was detected in seismic or infrasound (pressure) sensor data this week. Elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite data a few times, but most satellite views were obscured by clouds throughout the week. Future explosive activity is likely and is expected to occur without warning. Previous explosions have produced hazardous conditions primarily near the volcano, but occasionally they have been large enough to produce a drifting ash cloud. Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to ...

AVO Semisopochnoi ORANGE/WATCH - No activity seen in satellite or regional infrasound data; seismic network out

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 11/09/2018 - 16:32
Nov 9, 2018 22:01 - No eruptive activity was observed in satellite imagery or regional infrasound over the past week. The satellite link that transmits seismic data from Semisopochnoi failed on November 1, but an infrasound array on Adak Island should still detect significant explosive emissions from Semisopochnoi (with a 13-minute delay) if atmospheric conditions permit. A return to eruptive activity remains a possibility at Semisopochnoi and it could occur with little or no warning. AVO will continue to monitor the volcano closely. Semisopochnoi is normally monitored with an on-island ...

AVO Veniaminof ORANGE/WATCH - Eruption continues; active lava flow; minor ash and steam emissions

USGS Volcano Current Alerts - Fri, 11/09/2018 - 16:32
Nov 9, 2018 22:01 - Low-level eruptive activity occurred at the intracaldera cone of Veniaminof volcano throughout the past week, indicated by relatively continuous seismic tremor, as well as by elevated surface temperatures and an eruption plume observed in satellite and web camera images. The eruption is characterized by low-level lava spattering, a lava flow, and variable emissions of steam and volcanic ash up to altitudes of 14,000 ft. Recent satellite observations show that the lava flow extends about 1.2 km (0.75 miles) from the vent. Fractures in the summit ice sheet adjacent to the ...
