IRVINE, Calif. --

Forget "Fore!" "Fire!" was the cry of the day for a golfer whose off-target swing sparked a 12-acre blaze in Southern California. The golfer at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine landed a shot in the rough Saturday.

On his next swing, his club snagged a rock, causing a spark that lit the rough ablaze and eventually attracted 150 firefighters to the scene.

Fire officials say the fire burned through the rough, into vegetation next to the course and over two dry, brushy hillsides.

Aug. 29--SUNBURY -- Fireworks took on a double meaning Saturday night at Shikellamy State Park.

About 15 minutes after the 8:30 start of the planned pyrotechnics, shot from the park's overlook, falling sparks ignited brush and trees on the mountainside's eastern and northern faces.

It was a prospect some Valley residents had feared, downplayed Friday by park official Frank Nanna, who said shells that will travel 2,000 feet into the air could not cause forest fire.

Aug. 26--Fire officials in Valley County estimate the fire around Tamarack Resort doubled to about 1,000 acres Thursday, and while firefighters are battling the flank of the blaze they are avoiding the north side, which is moving quickly and unpredictably.

They say they are dealing with a few factors: High heat, low humidity, winds and thunderstorms that could create downbursts that can push the fire in any direction.

WALLACE, Idaho

Each year major wildfires in America's West are fought like military battles, with firefighters deploying by ground and air, bombers dropping retardant on flames, and incident commanders plotting strategy behind the lines. These often epic campaigns are largely the result of the Great Fire of 1910.

The largest in U.S. history, it burned an area bigger than Lebanon (the size of Connecticut), wiping out whole towns and killing 86 people in remote areas of Idaho, Washington and Montana.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin climbed into a firefighting plane Tuesday and dumped water on two of the hundreds of wildfires sweeping through western Russia and cloaking Moscow in a suffocating smog.

Putin has been a very visible leader in the battle against the fires, which have caused billions of dollars in damage and left thousands homeless in the past two weeks. He has demanded that soldiers help overstretched firefighting brigades and has walked through smoldering villages, consoling residents and promising them new homes by fall.
